Learn how to make the squished single crochet stitch, this stitch is full of texture and when crocheted flat looks like braids.

Hello all and welcome to a new stitch series! In this series I will walk you through different stitches that I am using to make coasters as my wedding favors. Yes, You read right, I Clarisabeth, 3 months before my wedding have decided to make at best 200 coasters and if my spirit holds 400 coasters for the 100 guests that I have invited to my wedding. I’m scared….

So to make this more enjoyable for me and to perhaps entice some of you to rescue me, I have decided to make photo tutorial of the stitches I will be using for these coasters.  First up is this beauty!

squished single crochet stitch

I was calling it an easy braid stitch because unfortunately the Vogue Dictionary of Crochet stitches does not have the names for any of the stitches included. Since then I have found out the true name of the stitch, squished single crochet.

Notes:

For the Video Tutorial I’m using Bernat Maker Home Dec and a 6.5mm hook

Photo Tutorial – I’m using Premiere cotton yarn in the Sage color (One of my wedding colors) and a 4mm crochet hook

The stitch works with any multiple of 2.

Onwards!

I am making squares the measure approximately 3.5 by 3.5 (coaster sized).

If you notice we were essentially making a sc decrease over two stitches.

Row 1:

*Insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the ch 1 space, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over pull through all 3 loops. Ch 1* Repeat from * to * across. Your final sc decrease will be made in the sc and the ch 4 space from the row below. Ch1 and turn.

Row 2: Insert your hook into the sc, yarn over pull up a loop, insert your hook into the ch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over pull through all 3 loops. Repeat this step until you work your last squished single. You will have 1 stitch left over. Into this stitch work a sc. Ch1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until desired length is achieved. For this coaster it was 3.5″ tall. Remember you are essentially working a sc decrease over the first stitch and the ch 1 space and it creates a beautiful texture!
