Hello Everybody! About a week ago I announced the start of the Mischief Managed Mal and I can’t even find words to describe how happy I am that so many of you decided to jump on board this Magical Bandwagon with me! I really am super excited about his MAL.

Inspiration for the Pumpkin Patch Shawl

It’s amazing to me how my approach to Harry Potter has changed throughout the years. When I first ventured down the road of Harry Potter the 4th book had just been released and I devoured it. Magic, dragons, witches, wizards, Bulgarians, I fell for it hook line and sinker! In my eyes, Harry Potter could do no wrong and Dumbledore was a kind, caring grandfatherly figure.

Now? Dumbledore is possibly the meanest character in the book, he was manipulative, left Harry Potter with abusive relatives, didn’t tell the Potters about the prophecy in a timely manner, etc. Not to mention he let Sirius Black go to jail because either a) he was prejudiced against the blacks or b) it made it easier to send Harry to live with Petunia. This of course doesn’t even touch on the authors clear disregard and hate towards non-binary people.

*Inhale, Exhale*

You may be wondering, what does all this rant have to do with a crochet pattern? Well, one of my favorite scenes in the first film is the Halloween (Samhain) feast. I just loved the food, the colors, the decorations, the carved pumpkins it all spoke to my soul. I really wanted to design something that would reflect this idea.

While a garment would certainly be comforting, the idea of burying myself in a shawl in front of a fire seemed very appealing.  I wanted this shawl to really represent fall, what better color than burnt orange? Thus, Crochet Pumpkin Patch Shawl was born.

Description

The Pumpkin Patch Shawl is a simple two-row repeat in extended single crochet, my favorite stitch at the moment. While the closed stitch used for the body represents our pumpkins, the lace border mimics the pumpkin leaves and vines. For this we use the Open Fan Stitch.

I made the shawl using Carron Simply Soft and Lion Brand Tweed stripes in the color Wildfire. Perfect fall colors in easy care yarns. You could, of course, substitute the yarn and hook sizes to suit your needs, just keep in mind that the quantity of yarn needed will change.

Finishing touches:
  • Fasten off, weave in ends.
  • Blocking
    • If you are using an acrylic yarn like I did, you can wash it and put it in the dryer to soften the acrylic. However the lace will open up better if you pin and steam block the border.

There you have it! A simple and colorful shawl that you can make for yourself, give as a gift or even use as a decoration… Of course, you do not have to make the Pumpkin Patch Shawl in orange, but I just felt is was quintessential.
