Adding binding isn’t your thing? The Sew Easy Placemats have your back!

Design Inspiration
Have I mentioned that I love Christmas? It’s my favorite time of the year. Yes, it might be cliche, but all the cheer surrounding the Holiday is so beautiful. So many crafty activities to engage in. Not to mention that for me, Christmas has always been about family.
But I digress, When it comes to Christmas, I must undertake all the crafty flair. This year, faced with the pandemic, the desire to fill my days with crafting was immense. As in, sew, crochet, bake all the things. Making a handmade Christmas was also a way of keeping my mom, grandmothers, and my neighbor close.
Also, my Christmas decorations lacked knick knacks. Problem solved by using all my Christmas appropriate fabric stash and ok, I bought some as well.
Regardless, with all three yards of Christmas Fabric at my disposal, I set about making all the things. Perhaps all the things is a bit of an exaggeration, but I did make 5 table runners and 5 sew easy placemats.

The Fabric
As mentioned, I had 3 yards of a Christmas tree themed fabric. Of course, I didn’t want to make plain placemats, so, I put my fabric scraps to good use.
I would say, the amount of fabric needed depends on the size of the place mats. Caution, be prepared to use a significant amount to make the sew easy placemats.
Of course, the sew easy placemats can be used with any fabric. Also, If you want to see a little bit of the process watch this vlog.
Sew Easy Placemats
Material:
- Fabric – I used about 4 yards total it you add the scraps
- Scissor
- Ruler or tape measure
- Pins
- Sewing machine
Helpful notes:
- All seams are 1/4″
- Always sew right sides together
- Final measurement – 12.5″(H) x 16.5″(L)
What I did
First, cut all your fabric pieces for the front of the placemats.
- My front pieces measure 10.5″ and 7.5″. With right sides facing Sew these two pieces together height-wise.

Then, we make our envelope back. Cut the back piece 3″ longer than the front. Afterwards cut the back piece so that one piece measures about 1″ longer than the other one. So if your back measure 20″, once piece will be 9″ and one 11″

Next, For each back piece, fold over 1/4″ of the cut section and sew.

Once you’ve sewn your seams on both back pieces, place front and back pieces right sides together and sew all around.

Lastly, trim your corners, and turn your sew easy placemats right side out.
Press to remove creases and there you have it! A finished placemat. I find that the sew easy placemat is more manageable than applying binding.
