Design and Inspiration

How do you guys feel about summer? I’ve only ever lived in one place that had actual seasons so summer and I are pretty intimate, although I will admit that our relationship has changed.

As a student summer meant the end of classes, the freedom to be a couch potato or do whatever I wanted. As an adult, summer doesn’t hold the same feeling of salvation. But it does mean, watermelon mojitos and a wardrobe change!

To kick off the summer I have designed a new crochet top. The top was inspired by the ongoing motif mania and the flower stitch. You guys must be pretty familiar with this stitch by now, after all just last year I released a Duster using this stitch.

Why do I love this stitch? Simple really, you get the motif look without the extra ends. Yes, I’m very lazy about weaving in ends. I just never think they are hidden enough.

Because of the fillet nature of this stitch, I always recommend using a cotton blend yarn, something that will not stretch epically.

The Yarn

Shine – n. a quality of brightness, especially from reflected light. A very apt name for a yarn, don’t you think?

Yes, yes it is. Which is why I used it! Shine Sport is a Wecrochet yarn, and it does earn its name. It’s a cotton/modal blend and it is oh so soft. Absolutely perfect for a crochet top. While on the website Shine sport is classified as a Sport weight yarn, I do find that it leans more towards the worsted side.

The yarn comes in 50g skeins each containing 110 yards. Which is why if you are looking for substitutions keep a careful eye on the yardage.

Overall, I think this yarn is very crochet top appropriate. It feels light and soft against the skin and the shine is just enough to add a bit of sophistication to your handmade item.

UPDATE: I’ve also made this top using Galileo yarn. Although this yarn is thinner than Shine Sport, it was lovely to work with.
