Inspiration & Design

In the Lazy Polka dot pattern I mentioned how I can’t seem to leave my patterns alone. There is always something I want to explore, changing the yarn, the hooks size, picking up sts differently, this Granny No 5 top is no exception.

December of 2024 I was designing a Christmas tree granny skirt, and while I was putting it together I thought “this could work as a neckline.” So I of course had to order yarn to test my theory.

The Yarn for granny no 5

While I hadn’t swatched for stitches or really any component of the garment, I knew I wanted to have a neutral colored top with pops of color. I spent days browsing crochet.com looking for the perfect color combinations. This neutral is too pink, these pops of color are great but there are not neutrals” On and on it went until I finally found Salvage. Appropriately named.

Salvage is a newish yarn that combines 95% Cotton (62-75% Recycled), with 5% Other Fiber. While this isn’t a very soft cotton, it does wash very well, and have wonderful drape. Even though this yarn is listed as a Sport weight, with 155yds in 50 g, it’s definitely on the lighter weight of the Spectrum.

Although the salvage range doesn’t provide a wide variety of color choices, I do feel that they all play really well together. Granted, I have favorites.

Out of the 15 colors I chose 5. Less is more is our neutral off white color with some grey undertones. Our contrasting colors are thrift flip – a lemony celery green, followed by Library Card – floral pink color with a blue undertone. Lastly, to match the blue undertones of Library Card, Rain Barrel. I’m so tickled pink with this color selection?

Also, the best thing about the yarn choices, you only use 1 ball of each of the contrasting colors for all sizes. How amazing is that?!

Can I make this?

Granny No 5 top is crocheted top down using the circular yoke technique. After we complete our yoke we work the body and sleeves separately before circling back and completing the neckline.
