Completed tulip bowl cozy using Dishie yarn in Linen and honeydew

Inspiration & Design

Almost a month ago now, I shared a reel showing a tulip bowl cozy and several of you expressed an interest in making one so I thought I would share in more detail how to go about crocheting your own tulip bowl cozy. A bowl cozy is not an original idea by any means, in fact in true Clarisa fashion I would say that I’m about 3 years late to the trend. However just because I’m late doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking about crocheting one since my neighbor gifted me a quilted one several years back. It’s in a beautiful chicken print fabric and the sections almost look like triangles, don’t they?

The Yarn

Because the purpose of a bowl cozy is to be able to microwave your food and remove the bowl without an I burnt my fingertips dance, you know the one, I recommend using 100% cotton yarns.

There are of course several options available for this but my favorites are Lily Sugarn and Cream and Dishie from crochet.com.

Both my bowls are actually crocheted with Dishie yarn one in Almond and one in Linen. Then for the contrasting colors I’ve used Jalapeño – the darker green and Honeydew – the lighter almost pastely green.

For the tulips themselves I’ve broken my own rule and used a 60% cotton/ 40% acrylic yarn blend in what I think is the perfect tulip yellow.

Can I make this?

The construction for our tulip bowl cozy is pretty simple. We start with our base, 4 solid triangles joined together, then we crochet some rounds around the raw edge of our base and follow that with the tulip stitch.

Tulip Bowl Cozy Instructions

To start our tulip bowl cozy base

Crochet 4, 4 round solid triangles following the instructions here. Then, we will join the triangles using sc.

After we join our 4 triangles, don’t cut your yarn.  We have the base of our bowl cozy and yes, it should curve slightly, ch1 and turn.

Tulip Cozy Sides

We should now be facing the outside of our bowl cozy, the sc join should be on the inside.

Now we work 72 sc or any multiple of 3 that you prefer,  around the raw edge of the bowl, sl st to the first st to join the round.

Complete 2 more sc rounds, then a dc round.

Border

Switch to your green color to start the first Tulip st row which is the V stitch stem part, once that is complete, switch to your tulip color and complete the popcorn sts in the ch1 of the V’s.

Cut yarn weave in your ends and the tulip bowl cozy is complete.
