Inspiration

It’s the perfect season to get learn a simple crochet cable. I mean any season is great to learn a new skill, but I think crochet cables really shine in the “Ber” months (Octo-ber, Novem-ber, Decem-ber). There is something so cozy and homey about seeing a cabled wool sweater that makes me think, “oh yes, I will stay at home drinking warm drinks and enjoying my cozy hobbies.”

As I said, crochet cables can look intimidating but in this simple crochet cable tutorial we are going to break the stitch down row by row and I promise that you will get used to the stitch.

If you prefer a video tutorial one is already up on my youtube channel

To practice this simple crochet cable you will need

Yarn – I’m using Lionbrand

A corresponding hook – Using a 5mm crochet hook

Stitches – Abbreviations all in US terms

  • Ch – chain
  • Fsc – foundation single crochet
  • Single crochet
  • Fpdc = front post double crochet
  • FPtr – front post treble crochet

Notes

  • Turning ch does not count as a stitch.
  • Front post stitches are worked into the row below – meaning we skip 1 row and work in the one below the skipped one.
  • For this simple cable stitch we will need multiples of 3 + 2.
  • The bold numbers at the end of the row are the stitch counts.

Simple Crochet Cable

Row 1 – Foundation single crochet in multiples of 3+2, I’m doing 14, ch1 and turn.

Row 2: sc in each st, ch1 and turn. 14

Row 3 (rs): sc in the current row, *sk2 sts, FPtr around the next st from the foundation row, working behind the FP tr just made, FPtr around the first st, FPtr around the second st, sk 1st, FPtr in the next two, working in front of the 2 sts just made, FPtr around the skipped st; rep from * once more, sc in the last st from current row, ch1 and turn. 4 cables (12 sts) and 2 sc. = 14 sts

Cable repeat rows

Row 1 (ws): sc in each sc, ch1 and turn. 14sts

Row 2 (rs): Sc in the current row, FPdc around each Fptr from row 3, sc in last st of current row, ch1 and turn. 14 sts

row 2 repeat on our simple cable stitch

Row 3 (ws): sc in each st, ch1 and turn. 14 sts

Row 4 (rs):  sc, *sk2 sts, FPtr around the next st from row 5, working behind the tr just made, FPtr around the first skipped st, FPtr around the second skipped st st, sk 1st, FPtr in the next two, working in front of the 2 sts just made, FPtr around the skipped st; rep from * once more, sc in the last st, ch1 and turn. 4 cables (12 sts) and 2 sc.

Rows 4 to 7 form 1 cable repeat.

Continue repeating rows 4 to 7 until your cable is the desired length.

To finish off the cable repeats I like to do an extra sc row for symmetry.

Back of the work

For a wider cable panel, simply crochet more stitches in your foundation row, remember that you need multiples of 3 +2.

Tune in next month for a shawl project using this stitch.
