Whimsical thermal oven mitt almost complete

Your interest in the thermal oven mitts have reminded me that I want a set for every season!

So taking advantage of the past Valentines day sale on crochet.com I sourced some Dishie in Snow, Fiesta Red and Honeydew to work up this more whimsical thermal oven mitt.

A note on using Dishie for this pattern

I designed the Thermal oven mitt pattern to use PeachesNCream yarn. Dishie is a very different “kitchen” cotton. The yarn is more tightly plied and has a buttery feel to it. While I absolutely love working with this softer kitchen cotton, we have to adjust the pattern slightly.

As a work around I chained 22 to add 2 more stitches to the total width of the wrist/arm section.

Since my gauge was off, I also worked up 2 extra rows before the wrist decrease section.

  • If you are not adding a strawberry stitch border to whimsi-fy these mitts and are using Dishie, I would add at least 4 extra rows before the wrist decrease section.

In addition to a wider wrist I increased the thumb section until I had 24 sts. These were distributed them as follows: 17 sts for the body and left 7 for the thumb section.

As mentioned my row count was also off. I worked up 2 additional body rows before starting my decrease section.

Are crochet oven mitts safe?

I have not had any problems with my crochet oven mitts. HOWEVER, there are a few things you can do to ensure maximum safety.

  • use 100% cotton yarn and do not keep near an open flame. As with store bought oven mitts keeping fabric near open flame is a fire hazard.
  • line your oven mitt, especially if you are using a single crochet pattern or a tunisian simple stitch.
  • Seriously, line them – Even if you are using a thermal stitch some heat can seep through Be extra safe and line your mitts with
    • 100% cotton quilters batting
    • quilting cotton
