By now you are probably familiar with my habit of revisiting old patterns and improving them. The Askew crochet Summer Top is no different. Technically speaking this is the third iteration of this style.

Inspiration & Design

It all started with the Winter vest, then the summer breeze tank. While the Summer Breeze Tank is easy to crochet and adjust up to certain sizes,  the neckline always bothered me. Since I wanted to improve on the neckline, why not incorporate techniques that would allow the top to flow and drape better.

Yarn for the Askew Top

A flowy top was easily fixed with Dilly Dally. This is a natural fiber yarn blend from @wecrochet. It’s a buttery yarn that provides lovely drape and its slight sheen makes the colors pop. The flow of this garment is mostly dependent on this yarn blend of Pima cotton, bamboo and hemp. As per the description of the yarn “Pima cotton brings softness, bamboo adds drape and sheen, and hemp gives strength and structure.”

Dilly Dally yarn is absolutely perfect for a cute summer top like Askew

Although I recommend this yarn blend, testers made gorgeous garments out of cotton and acrylic blend yarns. Don’t be shy and experiment with crocheting this summer top in a cotton yarn. In fact, the original summer breeze was crocheted with Comfy Cotton Worsted. Even though this yarn has a similar yardage to Dilly Dally, it produces a more structured fabric.

Tester Yarn Choices

yarn.witch.crafts crocheted the askew top twice in her test. What an honor!

Can I make this Askew Summer Top?

You absolutely can! In order to successfully crochet this top you need to know how to count stitches, increase, decrease and seam a garment.

In terms of stitches the Askew Top is crocheted in a simple 2 row pattern repeat that mostly uses double crochet’s. The front post sts that lend the top a slightly skewed look are trebles. In the paid for pdf you will find plenty of pictures as well as a chart sample to help you with the increase section of the pattern.

Notes
  • The ch1 at the end of the row doesn’t count as a stitch
  • The sts determine length and the rows determine width of tank top
  • Dilly Dally is a drapey yarn if you are between sizes, you could size down if you are using yarn of a similar drape.
  • For the first dc of the row I tend to do a stacked single crochet, other options are
  • Ch3 and turn so that your ch3 counts as your first st.
  • Extended sc in the first st – this has a similar height to a dc.
  • (Sc, ch1) – here the ch1 is treated as the top of the stitch
  • Make your ch1 loosely so that you can crochet a dc in the first st.
