Inspiration & Design

This June the crochetcakes youtube channel turned 10 years old. I wanted to organize a huge party-like situation but I was paralyzed by the “how”. I finally reached a decision while watching Kay of the Bakery Bears. I thought  it would be fun to take inspiration from the projects I was working on when I uploaded that very first podcast.

One of the  projects I was working on was a pair of knit socks. Now, I’m not a knit designer but I do love a pair of crochet socks. Luckily, I had two designs to pick from.

Way back in 2022 I was working with Knitcrate to design crochet socks inspired by a conservatory. When this company closed, the rights of 2 sock patterns reverted back to me. Today, we will be learning how to crochet the Under Glass Socks.

The Yarn

The original Under glass socks were crocheted with a soft and plump fingering weight yarn. Knitologie Dewie was a blend of Merino/Nylon and Tencel. This yarn only had 400 yds in 100g, as I said, quite plump. While you can of course crochet  with whatever yarn you have on stash, be mindful that you may have to adjust rounds to get the sock to your desired measurements.

For example, for the gorgeous green sock made with yarn from Julia of Esotericloth, I added 2 rounds to the toe to reach 2” and 2 rounds to the foot to get as close to 6.25” as I could.

Understanding crochet socks

From a stitches and techniques standpoint all you really need to know to crochet socks is how to increase, decrease, work in the round and read your crochet.

Full Description of Pattern

When you walk into a conservatory, where do your eyes go? The lush greenery, or perhaps to the architecture that makes it possible for the greenery to thrive? These Under Glass socks were inspired by dome glass ceilings often found in  conservatories.

The sock is crocheted toe up and features a boxed shell stitch which denotes the domes and their support structure. As with any architectural marvel the foundation needs to be solid. With this in mind, the Under Glass Socks are founded upon linked double crochet stitches.
