Add this quick pumpkin motif to your fall garland or use it as a large crochet coaster. Uses 20g of chunky weight wool and 1g of jute for the stem.

Inspiration & Design
Ever since I completed the (super cute) pumpkin granny square I’ve been wanting to crochet a pumpkin motif that would double as a large coaster. While there are some gorgeous ones on pinterest (my fave) I wanted a slightly rustic one with ridges. I spent a whole day trying different techniques, working flat, in the round, short rows, etc. None of these were resulting in what I wanted.
Still determined to crack my own pumpkin code, I decided to leave the pumpkin motif for some other time. Then, I quite literally dreamt that I was on my desk crocheting on said piece. I even dreamt that I was recording content with it as a coaster.
The Yarn
I even dreamt of the yarn that I was using. Dream Clarisa knew to visit her stash for some appropriate autumnal themed yarns.
Turns out a quick pumpkin motif with a slightly rustic vibe is very easy to achieve with some chunky wool yarn. Oh, did I mention that you only need 20g of chunky wool? This yarn weight not only adds speed to your crochet project but you can find some gorgeous colors in it. With colors like Chana dal from Berroco and Masala from Wool of the Andes, your pumpkin coaster will have some gorgeous depth as well.
If you don’t have any chunky wool on hand, this is a great project do double up strands of yarns and create your own color combinations.
Can I make this Pumpkin Motif?
I’m always rooting for you to make whatever makes your heart sing and this pattern is no exception. Not only can you follow the written instructions below but there is also a video tutorial over on Youtube.

Quick Pumpkin Motif
Skill Level – Intermediate
While this is a simple design I’m placing it under intermediate because we need to work behind some stitches. Don’t let this intimidate you, follow along with the video below.
Materials
- Yarn – 20g of chunky weight wool or cotton
- Casa sol filicor XL in CAldera
- Berroco Vintage Chunky ( 52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon / 136 yds in 100g)
- Wool of the Andes Bulky ( 100% Peruvian Highland Wool / 137 yds in 100g)
- 5mm Odyssey crochet hook
- for the Berroco Vintage Chunky I used a 4.5mm Furls streamline and like the overall fabric a bit more than the one made with the 5mm crochet hook.

Notes
- beg ch1 doesn’t count as a stitch
- we are working in the round
- if you sl st tightly consider going up a hook size for the sl st rounds.
- number in front of the stitch indicates how many of that stitch we are working 2sc = work a single crochet in the next 2 sts.
- instructions in ( ) = work in the same st.
- to keep track of all the sts in the round, instructions are separated by bullet points
Let’s start our quick pumpkin motif or large crochet coaster pattern
With your 5mm crochet hook, ch 8. Starting in the second ch from the hook

Round 1
- 2 sc, 3dc, sc, (sc, ch1, sc) in the last ch, turn 90 so that we are facing the bottom part of our ch.
- sc, 3dc, sc, sl st to the first sc to join the round, ch1 tightly.

Round 2
- sc
- * (hdc,dc)
- tr2inc
- tr
- tr2inc
- (dc, hdc) *
- 3sc
- rep from * to * once more
- sc in last st, sl st to join the round.

Round 3
- sc in the first st
- front post sl st around each st until you reach the bottom sc,
- 3sc,
- front post sl st around each st until 1 st remains, sc in last st.

These sl st rounds are to create the ridges of our large crochet coaster, we don’t actually work into the sl sts.
Round 4
- sc in the first st
- Working into the sts from round 2

- * (hdc, dc)
- dc2inc
- tr2inc
- tr
- tr2inc
- tr
- tr2inc
- dc2inc
- ( dc, hdc) *
- 3sc
- rep from * to * once more
- sc in last st, sl st to join the round.

For round 5, repeat round 3 instructions.

Round 6
- sc
- 3hdc
- * (hdc, dc)
- dcinc
- dc
- tr
- trinc
- tr
- trinc
- tr
- dc
- dcinc
- (dc, hdc) *
- 2hdc
- 3sc or if you want this to be your last round 3 sl sts
- 2hdc
- rep from * to *
- 3hdc
- sc in the last st, sl st to join the round

If you are ending your pumpkin in round 6, cut yarn and fasten off. Proceed to the stem.
Round 7
- sc
- front post sl st until you reach your bottom 3 sc, sl st in these sts, continue with front post sl sts until you reach the sc, sc in the last st, sl st to join in the round.

Stem
For the stem we only need 1g of yarn or 32″ in length. I think using Jute adds a lil rustic charm to the pumpkin but you can of course use yarn.
Attach yarn between the sc at the top of the pumpkin and work a granny st. After completing the granny st, cut yarn and fasten off. Remember to weave in all ends.
If you find that your pumpkin motif is curling slightly, steam block to relax the stitches.
