A granny square teapot cozy is a great project to practice the granny stitch or use up some spare granny squares. I’m using pumpkin granny squares for mine.

In the Tidy my craft room video we went over some of my languishing projects. In that pile, I uncovered two pumpkin granny squares leftover from the granny square vest. They were too cute to frog. My initial thought was to turn them into a coaster. However, after coming up with an actual pumpkin coaster pattern… PIVOT!

After 12 days of consulting with the muses, on Sept 16, Inspiration. Why not make 2 more squares with the same yarn and use them for a granny square teapot cozy.

The yarn

As the purpose of the granny square teapot cozy is to keep your drink hot longer, I recommend using a wool based yarn. While I don’t have a lot of information on the yarns that I used, I do recall they all had a percentage of wool.

In addition to the orange and butter cream color used for the granny square I leaned even more into the pumpkin theme by using an olive green for the very top of our cozy. All of the yarns used in the cozy are within the sport weight range. Listing some of my faves for you below

Construction of the Granny Square Teapot cozy

As the name of the project would suggest, we begin building our cover by crocheting and joining two granny squares, twice. Once these are joined we treat them like a granny rectangle. Then we attach yarn at the top and work our way around joining our two panels together. Next, we proceed with decreasing to close our circle and complete the cozy.

In order to crochet up this granny square teapot cozy you will need to be familiar with

  • Granny squares
  • Seaming
  • Working flat
  • Working in the round
  • Decreasing
  • Single crochet

Description

The granny square teapot cozy is an excellent project to use up any granny squares you may have hidden around your house. Not only is this a great project to use up some spare granny squares, but it’s a great scrap busting one as well. You can even turn it into seasonal decor item by switching out the granny squares used in the main portion of the cozy.

After completing round 4, fasten off and cut yarn leaving a long tail.

Thread the rail through the yarn needle. Insert yarn needle from back to front at the top of each st (like a running stitch). Pull the tail tightly to close the topper. Weave in ends

Seaming

Turning your granny square teapot cozy so that your right sides are facing, attach yarn ½” from the bottom and seam side for 1”. Repeat for remaining side.

We are just seaming the bottom part of our teapot cozy because at the top we joined in the round.

If you want to see how I usually seam tune into extra warm tea pot cozy tutorial minute 17:41.

Make sure that you weave in all your ends. Our granny square tea pot cozy is complete! If you are crocheting a pumpkin one like I did, you could embellish with a pumpkin leaf and vine.
