I don’t know about you, but I am finding it a bit incredible that we are already into October proper. Pumpkin season, the best season in my opinion, is in full swing and I couldn’t be happier. Actually, I lie, I would be happier if we actually had fall weather in Florida. Seriously, even Puerto Rico is cooler than this place, and that is saying something. I guess to be wrapped up in a cocoon of handmade woolly garments is every makers dream.
Either way, the lack of proper Fall weather has not stopped me from crafting on, especially now that the #sockcal2018 is going full throttle. Handmade socks are just so much fun! You can read all about crochet and knit socks here, if you have not already. And if you have yet to make some crochet or knit socks then, grab a yarn, grab a hook and get crafty!
I think I’m being a tiny bit ambitious for this sock years sockalong, last week I had 4 pairs of socks on the go! Only one of them was crochet which has to be remedied of course.
Here is the first finished sock for the month of October.
These are an altered shortie’s version of the Gorman Street Toe Up Sock by Ron Strong. I say altered because if you look closely at the heel you may or may not notice that it is a short row heel. In the book, Step into crochet, the pattern is designed with a gusset and a heel flap but in the interest of being Speedy Gonzalez I opted for a short row heel, I like the fit of them better. Since I have yet to master the science of crochet cuffs I chose to knit a 2 x 2 rib. 😀
The yarn was an eco printed hank of Polwarth Sock yarn (HEAVENLY!) purchased from Crafternoontreats . Favorite yarns! I am fondly calling these my banana milk socks
As previously mentioned, this lovely pair of crochet socks are not the only socks currently being worked on, I also have 3 pairs of knit socks on the needle, can you believe that?! I can’t but don’t freak out when I say this, they are Christmas gifts. EEEEp.
First up a pair of manly man socks for my Fiancé, who upon sorting through my yarn stash to de-stress already claimed another hank of yarn for his socks. Whoa! I have yet to finish this first pair,
No real pattern for these guys. I cast on 72 stitches originally but they turned out to be a bit too baggy on the leg, so I cast on the second sock with 68 stitches for the cuff and 70 for the leg, as shown in the picture I am using a pair of 9″ circulars from chiagoo (also the best 9″ circulars in my opinion) 2.25. I did think about knitting with 2.5’s and 64 stitches, just might do that for the next pair.
The other pair of socks I’ve had on the needles for a year, but I have cast on the second one!
My tension has loosened considerably since last year, but they are still a good functional pair of socks being knit from sturdy Regia yarn. These are a Christmas Present for my sister. Hopefully….
And, last but not least I cast on a new pair of socks for my lovely mother. The Jemimah Socks, a pattern by Kay Jones. Right now it’s just a cuff but hey, we will get there!
These are being knit on magic loop, but we will discuss how much I am not enjoying that in another post! These are also being knit using a Regia self striping yarn which is supposed to give you a perfect pair of stripey socks… I shall report back on the success of these socks. 😀
Goodness, those are quite a number of socks, at least for me, I usually only have one pair of socks on the go, but for some reason I always want to knit socks as gifts, it’s the one thing they won’t be able to buy in a store!
