Crochet Secret Garden Dress

Hello everybody! It is so nice to be sitting down and writing to you guys again this week about the crochet secret garden dress, crochet garments! Why? WEll Why not? But mostly for two reasons.

Saludos! Ya estrañaba sentarme a charlar con ustedes y esta semana les traigo otro blog de ropa tejida. ¿Porqué? Bueno 2 razones.

Number 1: Through out the past week there has been a staunch movement in defense of crochet and all its glory. Projects have been shared specifically to target crochet myths. I suspect most of us are familiar with these myths. Crochet has no drape, you can’t crochet beautiful garments etc. Now, while I have experienced some of the knitterly attitudes towards crochet, I have never felt nor will I ever feel crochet is inferior. Knitting and crochet simply produce different fabrics and there are some projects which are better suited to one craft than the other, does this make any craft inferior, NO!

Número 1 : Esta semana el mundo de instagram explotó con tod@s los tejeder@s defendiendo el ganchillo de los mitos antiguos. El tejido crochet no es bueno para ropa, el tejido crochet no se ve elegante etc. Yo he presenciado algunas de estas actitudes hacia el tejido con ganchillo, pero no nunca he pensado ni pensaré que un arte tejeril es mejor que la otra. Sí hay proyecto que quedan mejor con agujas que con ganchillos per eso es más bien por la tela que producen.

Number 2: I just finished my first ever crochet dress and I want to gush about it and share it with the world! Seriously, it is one awesome finished object which I will be taking with me on Summer Wedding vacation.

Número 2 – Acabo de terminar mi primer traje tejido con ganchillo y quiero gritarlo por todas partes. Estoy que halucinó con este proyecto!

Without further ado, let us talk about this beauty!

This is the Secret Garden Dress by Cassie Ward. The pattern was released on issue 101 of Inside crochet Magazine and I have been working on the this dress for almost an entire year. This dress was my crochet blanket so to speak. The dress was designed using 100% acrylic yarn but I wanted to use a yarn with a cotton content and  in August 2018  wool warehouse was having a sale of Conway&Bliss Lolli Yarn, which is now discontinued. Let me tell you guys, I bought a lot of yarn….

Les presento el SEcret Garden Dress por Cassie Ward. Este patrón fue publicado por primera vez en el issue 101 de Inside Crochet Magazine y he estado trabajando en el casi un año. Para mi tejer en este traje era como tejer una colcha. El traje fue diseñado utilizando lana acrilíca pero yo quería utilizar un hilo con algún contenido de algodón para poder usarlo en verano. En agosto la compañía wool warehouse tiró un super especial de los Ovillos Conway & Bliss Lolli, ahora descontinuados. Confieso que compré una cantidad exhirbitante de hilo.

About the Yarn

Lolli is a spekled cotton/polyester blend of yarn. The yarn is chain plied (the yarn itself looks like an icord) and a little bit thicker than dk in the speckled sections. It was lovely to work with, as the yarn is chain plied you don’t have to worry about the fibers splitting when you work with it, it is a bit fiddly when you are weaving in the ends though. I got a nice stitch definition with the yarn and the various hook sizes used in the pattern.

As the yarn is a cotton polyester blend it had a gorgeous drape and washed well. I honestly have no complaints about the yarn.

Lolli es un algodón jaspeado. El hilo tiene la apariencia de un icord tejido, y en las partes del jaspeado es un poco más grueso. A la verdad me encantó trabajar con este hilo. Produce una textura bella y por su apariencia los puntos quedan muy bien definidos. Solamente da un poco de trabajo esconder los hilos porque la aguja de remate puede traspasar la hebra.

For this project, I purchased 10 balls of my main color (Humbug, grey color), 8 balls of Lemon (a gorgeous bright yellow), 3 or 4 of apple (the sea green color, I am not sure about the total number purchased because I can’t find al the ball bands of this color), 5 of Taffy (blue), 5 of Mango (orange), 5 of Lime. 36 balls of yarn in total… YIKES! Of these 36 balls of yarn, each weighing 50 grams, I used 450g of the main color and y 150g each of the remaining colors.

Para este proyecto compré 10 ovillos del color Humbug (el gris), 8 del color Limón (un amarillo brillante y precioso), 3 del color manzana (el verde azulado), 5 del color Taffy (el azul), 5 del color Mango (anaranjado) y 5 del color Lima. Madre mía,  36 ovillos en total! De estos 36 ovillos, cada uno de 50 gramos, utilize 450g del color gris y 150 de todos los otros.

Crochet Secret Garden Dress

This dress is made up of individual grannies joined to form the dress. If you join them as you crochet (which is what I did) then you effectively have a front and a back to then join at the shoulder seams and the sides. The sleeves are crocheted after you have joined the dress. According to the pattern the finished size small should be 28.25″ in length. Way too short for me!!!

El traje está compuesto de grannies rayo de sol que se unen para formar el traje. Si unes los grannies mientras tejes tendrás una parte de al frente y la de atrás para unir al final. Las mangas se tejen luego de haber unido el traje. Según las medidas del patrón el tamaño small mide 28.25 pulgadas de largo, demasiado corto para mí Así que añadí 2 filas de punto alto y 3 de punto medio alto. Luego de lavar el traje la medida final es de 35 pulgadas, un largo mucho más acceptable para mi estatura de 5’7′

To add some length to the dress I crocheted 2 rows of double crochet and 3 rows of hdc, for the last row of hdc I switched to the orange yarn. Total length – 35″ much more acceptable for me.

Pattern Construction

The pattern is really easy to follow and I really didn’t have any questions. There are so many different ways you can tackle making this dress, you could crochet all your 1st rounds and then do all your 2nd rounds, you could work up all the squares individually and then join them, or you can do what I did. I worked the sunburst grannies until the third round and when I had a full row I would use the 4th and final round to joined as I crocheted. I would usually work up all the squared of 1 row or section and then join them. I followed the pattern for the construction of the garment per se, but not the grannies, for the grannies I used a youtube tutorial.

Las instrucciones del patrón son bien llevaderas, y aunque yo utilizé este tutorial para hacer los grannies rayo de sol., si las seguí para la construcción del cuello, hombros y mangas. Hay muchas maneras diferentes de ir construyendo este traje, puedes tejer todos los grannies de una vez y luego construir el traje, puedes tejer los grannies por pieza, es decir todos los cículos primero y luego continuarlos o puedes hacer como yo y trabajar todos los grannies de una sección hasta la vuelta 3 y luego usar la vuelta 4 para unirlos mientras vas tejiendo.

Would I make this pattern again? I’m not sure, it was a bit of a yarn hog and long term projects are not really my calling, but there is no denying that this is a Simple, Fun and Visually Stunning Crochet Dress and you must make it at least once!

¿Tejería este traje otra vez? No estoy segura, usa mucho hilo y es un proyecto a largo plazo para mí, confieso no ser buena con este tipo de proyectos. Pero no puedo negar que el resultado es uno halucinante y hay que tejerlo por lo menos una vez!

PS. I do recommend wearing a shift under the dress and the join as you go method is still pretty holey. // Recomiendo utilizar algún tipo de enagua o ropa interior cerca al color de tu piel con el traje.
