Hello fellow Crafters! If you have been following my podcast for a while, you may remember that I am getting married in T – 50 days. Breathe, Deep Inhale, Long exhale. As a lover of many crafts and an avid crocheter, I wanted to DIY my wedding, I bet you’ve also had this idea. Such a lovely one, imagining all the things we want to create from our wedding dress to the wedding favors.

I too went down this rabbit hole, except of course that even though my fiancé proposed on february 2018, I didn’t start seriously planning the wedding until now really. I though I had a lot of time to plan it, but we changed the wedding date from October to May so all the decorating ideas went caput. But the venue I chose is supposed to be responsible for most of the decorating, so there is that. In lieu of this panic my first tip is

1) Don’t do anything last minute if you can avoid it.

  • In other words, don’t do what I did and plan all your decorations ahead of time and start working on them. I really recommend at least giving yourself a year to work on all the crafty wedding bits.

2) Do not be over ambitious

  • I know, I know, this one is hard, we want personal touches everywhere in the decor, but take it from me, crocheting wedding favors for everybody is just a lot of stress that nobody needs, especially if you leave it all towards the end like me.

3) Go small – (For me this is the most important tip.

  • as mentioned above, I wanted to crochet my wedding favors, but that was a huge flop, you can read all about that here. So instead of being this ambitious, I am focusing on crocheting succulents for the cake decorations, and 1 cactus for each table. This is very doable.

Here is one adorable cactus!

  • crochet or diy your cake topper – this is a great way to add a personal touch to your cake without going all out on the decorations, just talk to your baker and explain your cake topper idea so that they may incorporate it into the overall design. Or choose a simple frosting decoration.
  • focus on one table to grace with your crafty mojo. In my case, I’m focusing on my cake table. Because crochetcakes guys.
  • Make, crochet, felt, knit, sew your own flower bouquet or the buttonholes for the groom and groomsmen.

4) Have a schedule

  • This is very very helpful, have a calendar handy and with the help of sites like Zola, know what needs to be done every step of the way.

5) Don’t do it all by yourself

  • This one may seem obvious, but I still forgot it and boy has it been overwhelming. If your maid of honor, or any of your bridesmaids are within reach, enlist them to help. If you are part of a crafty group, gather them and ask for help!

6) Know what you can and cannot do. This one is pretty self explanatory.

There are so many other things I could tell you, but what I have found is that , it is much more agreeable to have a venue that can take care of the major decorating for you. This allows you to focus on other details.

In the end guys, the most important thing to remember is that Marriage is more than the wedding day. At the end of it all you will be married to whom you wanted to spend a significant part of your life with.
