Inspiration and Design

For a while now I have been meaning to turn my wardrobe into a more sustainable/me wardrobe. While I was looking into clearing out my wardrobe I stumbled upon a blue high-waist skirt with funky print. After ooing and ahing at the skirt I realized I had never actually worn it. After perusing my wardrobe it became apparent why this was never worn. I had to shirt or blouse that went with the skirt!

Well crafty friends, I decided to crochet one. Whilst looking at the skirt I realized that I had the exact shade of orange in yarn. Cue stash diving for the remnants of the Lolli Yarn in the Mango Color. It really is amazing how much of this yarn I bought. I had already made the Secret Garden Dress , and the second Riveret top out of it.

Do I get points for stash diving? I think I should. Anyway, I didn’t want to over complicate my life with the top so I decided to make a dk weight version of the Bobble in Time Top . Don’t despair, I won’t waste your time by making the same top. While I kept the same stitch count, the length, fit, and sleeves of the top are different! Crop tops are really the best pair for high-waist skirts.

The Yarn

As stated above, I had quite the stash left over from the first project I made with Lolli Yarn. No regrets because I love this yarn. Cotton and polyester unite in this yarn to make a knit tube that really shows off the crochet stitches. The yarn is very visually appealing with flecks of grey and neon at certain intervals. Before I sell you anymore on this yarn, it has been DISCONTINUED. Yes, it has. Therefore, if you would like to make this pattern you will have to go with a different yarn that has a similar yardage. I know, this may not appeal to everyone but there are many gorgeous yarns out there.

Don’t despair, while Lolli Yarn makes up the body of the Bobble Crochet Crop Top, the contrasting bands are made in a wool yarn. Any dk weight wool will work for the contrasting bands. Of course, you are more than welcome to use another dk weight yarn.

Can I make this?

The Mango Tango Bobble Crop Top is really easy to make. If we break it down, the top is made from two rectangles that are sewn together at the shoulder and sides. After the piece is sewn together, the sleeve stitches are picked up.

Mango Tango Bobble Crochet Crop Top – Instructions

Materials:

Main Color: 200 (250, 350, 450) g / 480(600,840,1,000) yds of a cotton blend yarn, preferably chain plied or knit tube. I used Lolli by Conway and Bliss in the Color Mango.

Contrasting Band: 50(75,100,125) g of dk weight yarn. I used a 100% wool yarn.

4mm hook, if you would like for the garment to have slight shaping switch to a 3.75mm after the contrasting band is complete.

scissors

measuring tape

tapestry needle

Pattern Notes:

The model is wearing size small/medium. For reference, the model is 5”7, with a true bust measurement of 33” and a 28” waist.

The top is designed to be a comfortable fit, if you would like a fitted garment you can use sport weight yarn, or make the Bobble in Time Top, the fingering weight version that inspired this one. For the size small I had 30g left over of the main color and 35g left over of the contrasting color.

Unlike the Bobble in Time top this one is designed to be quite cropped. If you would like a longer top simply add more rows before the armhole shaping. If you would like some waist shaping crochet the band with a 4mm hook and the body with a 3.75mm

Experience Level : Advanced Beginner
For this pattern you will need to know how to make the bobble stitch, how to make a sl st, sc, hdc, and dc stitch.
