A reassuring warm hug when you need one. As per my husband’s comments: “The extra cozy crochet blanket makes me feel safe.”
To those of you who have successfully completed a crochet blanket, I salute you. I have never been one to commit to the long term endeavors of a crochet blanket. Perhaps it’s because I’ve never lived in a place where I could appreciate snuggling under a handmade blanket.
Whatever the reason, this year I have actually made 2 blankets. Dare I say it, they were fun. Around the start of the Pandemic Crisis, I crocheted the Summer sorbet blanket. After, I found myself with 3 bonus bundles of Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in the Fisherman color which complimented the balls of Patons Bulky in Vermillion Red that were already in my stash.
These 2 colors reminded me of the Hammonds Candy Canes. It was such an instant image that I knew I had to make an extra cozy crochet blanket with it!
Because of the limited yarn quantities, I went with a rectangle shaped blanket.
Have you worked with LionBrand Wool Ease Thick and Quick before? It’s so soft and when used with a 10 or 12mm hook it creates a really gorgeous fabric.
I managed to score 3 bonus bundles of said yarn for 2.97 at a Michaels sale, I know! It’s unheard of! Since I already had a collection of Bulky and Super Bulky yarns, I knew that pairing these with the Fisherman color would yield an extra cozy crochet blanket.
Not only did I get lucky by scoring so much yarn at a huge discount, but I already had some Bulky Patons wool, Bernat Chunky and Buttercream in my stash. While not all of these yarns have a wool content, they all worked together quite nicely to produce an extra cozy crochet blanket.
Of course, holding the Fisherman color together with the other yarns did help all the yarns play together.
Can I make this extra cozy crochet blanket?
The stitch used in the blanket pattern is very simple. It’s a combination of single crochets and crossed double crochets. Since the stitch is quite simple, let your color combinations rule this design.
If you don’t have enough bulky/super bulky to work this extra cozy crochet blanket, simply use 3-4 strands of worsted held together to substitute 1 strand of the bulky. After all, the idea of this blanket is to use up as much of your stash as possible.
Yes, stash-busting endeavors continue and will probably do so for the foreseeable future. but also, yarn… I mean, have you seen all the bonus bundle colors?
The blanket features a simple design, made interesting by holding 2 strands of bulky/super bulky yarn together. The result is an extra snuggle worthy blanket that will keep you and your loved ones very warm during the winter months.
Even though the dimensions and the instructions provided are for a blanket, feel free to add or subtract repeats for a cozy rug or pillow. Dream it. Make it.
