Basic Fingering Weight Beanie – Crochet

Design Inspiration

Since Christmas, we have been graced with lovely cold weather. Because of this, my husband asked me to make him a classic color beanie. His other beanies are camo and a blue/grey similar to knitpicks Cadet Colorway.

I don’t know about you, but to me, nothing says classic like black. With yarn in hand I sat down to crochet his classic beanie. Of course, I had to make my job a tiny bit complicated and film the making of said beanie for the insta family. If you want a peek at the OG Beanie click here for the reel.

As you can see, my husband loves his hat, so do I for that matter. It’s simple, and quick to crochet up. You can’t go wrong.

Yarn

If you watched the reel, you may spot that I used Ulysse de rerum Natura in a black heather color. This yarn, I want it in my life forever. It’s such a lofty soft wool yarn. I fully regret not buying more of this yarn at EYF in 2018. Clarisa, of the past, you should have hoarded this gem.

As it stands, I only had two balls of this scrumptious wooly goodness. One in a heather black and the other in a heather grey. If you, like me, can’t resist looking at yarn, their website has so many lovely colors!

Construction of the basic fingering weight beanie:

The hat is crocheted crown to brim and will fit an adult head (20 – 22″). If you would like to make the hat smaller simply work less increase rounds.

The hat measures 8.5″ in length, if you would like a shorter hat simply decrease the number of dc rounds.

The body of the hat is crocheted using dc stitches (US terms) and the brim is made using slip stitches.

How to Crochet Basic Fingering Weight Beanie

Materials

1 ball of Ulysse – de rerum Natura / 100% wool/ 202 yds (185 m) / approx 50 g ball

Hooks: 3.25mm and 5mm

Scissors

Yarn Needle

Stitch Marker

Stitches Used

• ch-chain
• dc – double crochet
• dc2inc – double crochet increase
• slst blo – slip stitch back loop only.

Notes:

• 1 50g ball makes 1 Adult beanie
• following the given instructions 17g will be left over
• Pattern and Tutorial in US terminology
• Rd = round

To Start the basic fingering weight beanie:

Use a 3.25mm to make a magic loop, ch1 to close the ring

Rd1 – ch3, make 11 more dc into the ring. Sl st to the top of the ch3 to join. Ch1 (12)

Rd2 – dc2inc in each stitch. (24)

Rd3 – *dc, dc2inc* repeat from *to*. Sl st to join. Ch1

Rd4 – *dc2inc, 2dc* repeat from *to*. Sl st to join. Ch1

Rd5 – *3dc, dc2inc* repeat from *to*. Sl st to join. Ch1.

Rd6 – *dc2inc, 4dc” repeat from *to*. Sl to join. Ch1.

Rd7 – *5dc, dc2inc* repeat from * to *. Sl to join. Ch1.

Rd8 to 18 (11 rounds) – dc in each stitch.

Brim

Once you have made the hat as long as you like, Place a stitch marker in the stitch where you joined. Switch to your 5mm crochet hook, turn. We should now be facing the inside of the hat.

Rd1- Slst blo, around the hat. Do not join, we will now work in a spiral.

Repeat round 1 until you have completed 1″ of brim. Feel free to make your brim longer or shorter.

Cut your yarn and weave in your ends.

You now have a lovely and warm basic fingering weight beanie to keep or store for future gifts.
